Why are we here?
Much like your career, marriage, and relationships…. You need to intentional with what you let into your mind.
If you don’t want to be at work on the weekends or when you’re on vacation, stand fast against letting those type of communications in.
Story Time
- Kolby checked his email recently over the weekend before going on a date with Kari and guess how that worked out? Not well 🙂
- Shaun has received those 4:50 PM emails before that you really wish you hadn’t looked at
Why is this so important?
- You cannot be intense and intentional with your other buckets if you are focussing on other areas.
- In Kolby’s example, his intensity and intention were diverted from his date night back to his work.
- This not only impacts your own stress and wellbeing, but also those around you i.e. your spouse, children, etc.
How can we fix this?
- Turn off notifications when you don’t need them!
- This not only applies to the weekend or PTO but do you really need every email or IM alerting on your phone?
- Do you really need those Instagram and Facebook alerts all throughout the day?
- It all comes back to being intense and intentional – remember, every distraction causes you to lose 20 minutes of focus.
- Be clear about your intentions of checking emails, messages, social media, etc so others have clear expectations.
- This can extend past your professional life.
- If you can’t text your spouse/friends during work, be clear about that.
- This can extend past your professional life.
- Schedule times for checking emails and allowing interruptions
- If you do feel you need to check in while away from work, do the same. Schedule when you’re going to allow this into your other buckets and be sure not to let it flow into your other buckets (i.e. Kolby’s story).
- What about in Shaun’s situation where you saw the 4:55 PM email and now you can’t get your mind off it? Meditation can help! (http://hustleandharmony.com/010)
- Can’t get it off your mind still? Reach out to someone on this. Could be a friend that you could discuss this with and walk through a solution (http://hustleandharmony.com/014).
